Democratic governor candidate Bill O’Neill to announce running mate

Ohio Supreme Court Justice William O’Neill says he’s going to name his running mate in the governor’s race on Tuesday.

That will make him the second of the six Democratic candidates to announce who he is running with.

State Sen. Joe Schiavoni announced last week he is running with Ohio Board of Education member Stephanie Dodd.

The other Democrats running for governor include Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, former Attorney General Richard Cordray, and former Congresswoman Betty Sutton, former State Rep. Connie Pillich

Republicans running for governor include Attorney General Mike DeWine, Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor and Congressman Jim Renacci.

POLITICO: Ohio Senate race ranks as one to watch in 2018

Politico put out a list of U.S. Senate races to watch next year and Ohio’s made the list.

The Ohio race ranked at #7 on the list.

Portman named to conference committee on tax bill

Jessica Wehrman and Michael Dulman in our Washington Bureau report that Sen. Rob Portman’s influence over the tax legislation racing through Congress will continue.

Portman, R-Ohio, was named last week as one of the senators to be part of a conference committee with the House to forge a final compromise of the GOP-backed plan to overhaul the tax code and reduce tax rates for corporations, small companies, and individuals.

Brown has concerns about Trump pick for currency post

Sen. Sherrod Brown says he’s concerned about President Donald Trump’s nominee to be Comptroller of the Currency.

Joseph Otting, former CEO of OneWest Bank, “contributed to the devastation” of the 2008 financial crisis, Brown, ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, said during a hearing Thursday of the Senate Banking Committee, by “kicking seniors and families out of their homes, while pocketing $2.5 billion from the FDIC to protect his bank from these losses.”
